About the Pathine Text Summarizer

Reduces a long piece of writing to the part you needed. Three shapes: one sentence, a short paragraph, or bullet points — because 'summarise this' means different things depending on what you are about to do with it.

It works only from what is in front of it. It will not add a figure, a name or a conclusion that was not in your text, and if a passage is too short or too incoherent to summarise it says so rather than producing something plausible. An invented number in a summary is the one error a reader cannot catch.

When you'd reach for it

An article you are not sure is worth reading

A short paragraph tells you whether to spend the twenty minutes. Faster than skimming and more reliable than reading the headline.

Meeting notes into something sendable

Bullet points turn a wall of transcript into the four things that were decided.

A subject line or a summary field

One sentence, for the top of a document, a ticket title or the preview text of an email.

A long thread you were added to late

Paste the whole thing and find out what it is about before replying to it.

How to summarise a long piece of text

  1. Paste the text

Up to 10,000 characters — roughly 2,500 words. For something longer, do it a section at a time.

  2. Choose the shape

One sentence to decide, a short paragraph to understand, bullets to act on.

  3. Check it against the source

Particularly any numbers. The tool is instructed not to invent, and a glance costs nothing.

  4. Copy it

Straight to the clipboard. Nothing is kept here.

Common questions

Will it make things up?

It is instructed to use only what is in your text, and to say so rather than invent when a passage is too thin to work with. Check figures anyway — a wrong number in a summary is the one mistake that travels, because the whole point of a summary is that nobody re-reads the original.

How long can the text be?

10,000 characters, about 2,500 words. A longer document is better summarised in sections anyway: a single paragraph standing in for forty pages loses the thing you were looking for.

Is my text sent anywhere?

Yes. Summarising needs a model far too large to run in a browser tab, so your text goes to a server, is held in memory for a second or two, and is never written to disk or kept. Most of the site works the other way round, and this page is marked differently because it is different.

Can it summarise a PDF or a web page?

Not directly — it takes text. Copy the part you want and paste it in. For a scanned document, Image to Text will pull the words out first.

Does it work in other languages?

Yes, and it answers in the language you pasted. A German article gets a German summary.
